Open pedagogies is a certain type of learning approach, of many. Let us begin by breaking it down into two pieces- open and pedagogies. In this instance, open refers to open educational resources, defined by UNESCO as any type of educational materials that are in the publib domain, or introduced with an open license. Pedagogy is the practice and method of teaching; focusing on how we teach, rather than what we teach. The commitment to learner navigated education, by prioritizing the engagement of students in the creation of content, as well as public knowledge, and making learning accessible, is a way to fully describe an open pedagogy. It is a model of experimental learning, where the students have the opportunity to show their understanding through design and creation. Typically, these outcomes generated have an open license, which means that they can exist beyond the class in the hope to have an impact on the wider community. Some examples of what this learning approach could include is designing assignments, marking rubrics, or policies, a series of practicing learning styles or states of mind, and creating, modifying, or improving open educational resources (such as wikipedia or a textbook). In altering resources that already exist, the specific needs of the group are used as a guiding factor to do so.

The purpose of having students use open education resources, is to better help them graps how to participate as a member of an open community. A key characteristic of open pedagogies is that students engage as creators of information, instead of simply being consumers of it. Furthermore, it allows a person to demonstrate understanding through their action and creation. Being able to personalize learning, leads students to have a chance to discover relevance in the work, organize ideas into key contexts, and bring a positive addition to society, as a general whole. Overall, a big advantage of open pedagogies is the invitation to the learner to have a role as a co creator of knowledge. Aspects of this approach does in fact align with my pods chosen topic of study habits and strategies for taking academic tests, aimed at university level students. In gaining ways to study better and increase performance on assessments, one must do so with personalization. Along the road of seeing what works best for you, and what doesn’t, you become a creator in a study guide, along with strategies.
